Porto Alegre, November 7, 2023 – The planting of the new Brazilian soybean crop once again registered less significant progress in the period between October 28 and November 3. The irregular climate, with excessive rainfall in the South and little moisture in the North and Northeast, prevented farm machines from advancing better, keeping the national percentage below last year and the five-year average for the period.

According to research carried out by SAFRAS & Mercado, through November 3, Brazilian growers had sown 47.4% of the total area expected for the country in the 2023/24 season. The percentage is equivalent to approximately 21.603 mln hectares sown, out of a total of 45.619 mln hectares estimated for planting. In the previous week, the percentage was 37.1%, while in the same period of the previous year the percentage was 55.9%. The five-year average for the period is 56.9%.

In Rio Grande do Sul, out of an expected total area of 6.6 mln hectares, 5% were sown, or the equivalent of approximately 330 thousand hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 0.5%. In the same period last year, the percentage was 7%, while the five-year average for the period is 13.8%.

In Paraná, 72% of the area destined for soybeans was sown. The percentage is equivalent to approximately 4.248 mln hectares planted, out of a total of 5.9 mln hectares estimated for the state. The previous week, the percentage was 60%. In the same period last year, the percentage was 70%, while the five-year average for the period is 76.4%.

In Mato Grosso, of an expected total area of 12.23 mln hectares, 84% have already been sown, equivalent to approximately 10.273 mln hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 71%. In the same period last year, the percentage was 94%, while the five-year average for the period is 90.8%.

In Mato Grosso do Sul, of a total area estimated at 4.28 mln hectares, 59% were sown, or the equivalent of approximately 2.525 mln hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 39%. In the same period of 2022, the percentage was 73%, while the five-year average for the period is 69.4%.

In Goiás, out of an expected total area of 4.7 mln hectares, 44% were sown, or approximately 2.068 mln hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 37%. In the same period last year, the percentage was 62%. The five-year average for the period is 62.0%.

In São Paulo, out of a total area estimated at 1.4 mln hectares, 35% were sown, equivalent to approximately 490 thousand hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 22%. In the same period of the previous year, the percentage was 63%. The five-year average for the period is 52.0%.

In Minas Gerais, out of an expected total area of 2.2 mln hectares, 33% were sown, or the equivalent of 726 thousand hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 21%. In the same period of the previous year, the percentage was 35%, while the five-year average for the period is 47.8%.

In Bahia, out of a total area estimated at 2 mln hectares, 12% were sown, or approximately 240 thousand hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 7%. In the same period last year, 18% had been sown. The five-year average for the period is 19.2%.

Climate maps now point to moisture in practically all producing states in the country between November 5 and 11 but with lower accumulations expected for sections of the states of Mato Grosso and Minas Gerais. Work should progress again at a good pace in the Midwest, Southeast, Northeast, and North regions. The largest accumulation levels are once again expected for the states of the Southern Region, which may once again have problems with the advancement of farm machines.

In the period between November 12 and 18, the weather maps point to a scenario very similar to that of the previous week, but with lower accumulations expected for the states in the Northeast Region.
