Soybean planting gains momentum and exceeds the average in Brazil

Porto Alegre, October 29th, 2024 – The planting of the new Brazilian soybean crop made significant progress between October 19 and 25, making up for much of the delays accumulated to date. Regular rainfall in most of the country once again created a favorable environment for germination and initial development of crops across the country, encouraging the advancement of farm machines in all growing states. Although work remains behind schedule in Mato Grosso, the strong progress made last week brought a significant recovery to the planting pace, reducing accumulated delays. At a national level, work is now above the five-year average for the period.

According to a survey conducted by SAFRAS & Mercado through October 25, Brazilian growers planted 36.1% of the total area expected for the country in the 2024/25 crop. The percentage is equivalent to approximately 17.113 mln hectares sown, out of a total of 47.401 mln hectares estimated for planting. The previous week, the rate was 16.8%, while in the same period last year it was 37.1%. The five-year average for the period is 33.3%.

In Rio Grande do Sul, out of a total area estimated at 6.87 mln hectares, 4% were sown, or approximately 275 thousand hectares. The previous week, 2% were sown, while in the same period last year the percentage was 1%. The five-year average is 2.4%.

In Paraná, 65% of the area destined for soybeans were sown. The percentage is equivalent to approximately 3.835 mln hectares planted, out of a total of 5.9 mln hectares estimated for the state. The previous week, the rate was 44%. In the same period last year, the percentage was 60%, while the five-year average for the period is 46.2%.

In Mato Grosso, out of a total expected area of ​​12.58 mln hectares, 56% have already been sown, equivalent to approximately 7.045 mln hectares. The previous week, the percentage was 24%. In the same period last year, the percentage was 71%, while the five-year average for the period is 63%.

In Mato Grosso do Sul, out of a total estimated area of ​​4.35 mln hectares, 50% have been sown, or approximately 2.175 mln hectares. The previous week, the percentage was 26%. In the same period last year, 39% had been sown. The five-year average for the period is 37.4%.

In Goiás, out of an expected area of ​​4.85 mln hectares, 35% were sown, or approximately 1.698 mln hectares. The previous week, the rate was 12%. In the same period last year, the percentage was 37%, while the five-year average for the period is 34.2%.

In São Paulo, out of an expected total area of ​​1.44 mln hectares, 34% were sown, or approximately 490 thousand hectares. The previous week, the rate was 11%. In the same period last year, 22% had been sown. The five-year average for the period is 26.4%.

In Minas Gerais, 26% were sown, or approximately 611 thousand hectares of a total area estimated at 2.35 mln hectares. The previous week, the rate was 8%. In the same period last year, 21% had been sown. The five-year average for the period is 22.4%.

In Bahia, out of a total expected area of ​​2.1 mln hectares, 15% have been sown, or approximately 315 thousand hectares. The previous week, the rate was 3%. In the same period last year, the percentage was 7%, while the five-year average for the period is 4.3%.

Climate maps now indicate a period of high moisture over the states of Minas Gerais and Goiás between October 27 and November 2, which, despite being favorable for crops already sown, may prevent better progress of machines. The other states in the Southeast and Midwest, in addition to the South region, should receive smaller accumulations during the period, while the Northeast and North regions should receive little moisture.

In the period between November 3 and 9, more significant moisture will once again spread throughout the country, with large accumulations expected for several states in all regions.
