Porto Alegre, February 17, 2021 – The harvest of the new Brazilian soybean season has shown moderate progress in the country. Mato Grosso remains with a more consistent performance, followed by the states of Goiás and Minas Gerais.
The rather moist climate in Paraná and Mato Grosso do Sul has prevented steadier progress in recent days.
According to a survey carried out by SAFRAS & Mercado, until February 12, 7.1% of a total sown area of 38.610 million tons were reaped, equivalent to approximately 2.741 million hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 3.4%. In the same period last year, 22.9% of the area had already been reaped, while the five-year average for the period is 19.8%.
In Paraná, out of a total area of 5.6 million hectares sown, 2% were reaped, or the equivalent to nearly 112 thousand hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 1%. In the same period last year, 17% were already reaped, while the five-year average for the period is 19.2%.
In Mato Grosso, out of a total sown area of 10.3 million hectares, 22% were reaped, or approximately 2.266 million hectares. In the previous week, the index was 11.2%. In the same period last year, 59% had already been reaped. The five-year average for the period is 44.8%.
In Minas Gerais, out of a total area estimated at 1.82 million hectares, 2.5% were reaped, or nearly 46 thousand hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 0.5%. In the same period of the previous year, the index reaped reached 8%. The five-year average for the period is 9.6%.
Weather maps point to great rainfall over the entire North, Midwest, and Southeast regions between February 12 and 18. In the main growing provinces of Argentina, maps show moderate rainfall. In the state of Mato Grosso Sul, only reasonable rain is expected for some regions, which can contribute to the advancement of machinery. In the other states of the Midwest, North, Northeast, and Southeast, significant moisture is expected, which must hinder more considerable progress of the harvest.
In the period between February 19 and 25, moisture must be more concentrated in the states of the north and south of the country.
