Porto Alegre, February 23, 2021 – The harvest of the new Brazilian soybean season remains slow in the country. The state of Mato Grosso continues to stand out, followed by the states of Goiás and Minas Gerais.
The rather moist climate in the South, Southeast and parts of the Midwest regions prevented more consistent progress in recent days.
According to a survey carried out by SAFRAS & Mercado, until February 19, 12.4% of a total sown area of 38.610 million tons were reaped, equivalent to nearly 4.794 million hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 7.1%. In the same period last year, 30.4% of the area had already been reaped, while the five-year average for the period is 26.6%.
In Paraná, out of a total area of 5.6 million hectares sown, 5% were reaped, or the equivalent of approximately 280 thousand hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 2%. In the same period last year, 25% were already reaped, while the five-year average for the period is 26.8%.
In Mato Grosso, out of a total sown area of 10.3 million hectares, 34% were reaped, or nearly 3.50 million hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 22%. In the same period last year, 74% had already been reaped. The five-year average for the period is 55.8%.
In Minas Gerais, out of a total area estimated at 1.82 million hectares, 9% were reaped, or approximately 164 thousand hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 2.5%. In the same period of the previous year, the index reached 17%. The five-year average for the period is 16%.
Weather forecasts point to greater rainfall over the entire North, Southeast and sections of the Midwest in the period between February 19 and 25. In the main producing provinces of Argentina, the forecast is for little rainfall. In the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, little rainfall is also expected, which can contribute to a significant advance of the harvest. In other states of the Midwest, North, Northeast, and Southeast, a significant level of moisture is expected, which must hinder a better work pace.
In the period between February 26 and March 4, moisture must remain concentrated in the northern states and parts of the country’s Midwest.
