Soybean harvest advances and remains above average in Brazil

Porto Alegre, March 12, 2024 – The harvest of the new Brazilian soybean season once again registered reasonable progress in the period between March 2 and 8.

According to research carried out by SAFRAS & Mercado, through March 8, 52.7% had been reaped from a total sown area of 45.409 mln hectares, equivalent to approximately 23.946 mln hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 45.7%. In the same period of the previous year, the percentage was 48.9%. The five-year average for the period is 51.3%.

In Rio Grande do Sul, out of a total sown area of 6.6 mln hectares, 2% were reaped, or the equivalent of approximately 132 thousand hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 0.5%. In the same period of the previous year, the percentage was 0%. The five-year average for the period is 4.5%.

In Paraná, out of a total area of 5.9 mln hectares sown, 67% were reaped, or the equivalent of approximately 3.953 mln hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 56%. In the same period last year, the percentage was 33%, while the five-year average for the period is 49.2%.

In Mato Grosso, out of a total sown area of 12.1 mln hectares, 91% were reaped, or approximately 11.011 mln hectares. The previous week, the percentage was 86%. In the same period last year, the percentage was 95%. The five-year average for the period is 90.2%.

In Mato Grosso do Sul, out of the total estimated area of 4.28 mln hectares sown, 64% were reaped, or the equivalent of approximately 2.739 mln hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 53%. In the same period last year, the percentage was 40%, while the five-year average for the period is 66.0%.

In Goiás, out of a total sown area of 4.65 mln hectares, 65% were reaped, or approximately 3.023 mln hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 57%. In the same period last year, the percentage was 71%. The five-year average for the period is 64.0%.

In São Paulo, out of a total area estimated at 1.4 mln hectares, 47% were reaped, or approximately 658 thousand hectares. The previous week, the percentage was 40%. In the same period last year, 35% had been reaped. The five-year average for the period is 45.6%.

In Minas Gerais, out of a total sown area of 2.2 mln hectares, 50% were reaped, equivalent to approximately 1.1 mln hectares. The previous week, the percentage was 38%. In the same period last year, 42% had been reaped, while the five-year average for the period is 41.2%.

In Bahia, out of a total sown area of 2 mln hectares, 15% were reaped, or approximately 300 thousand hectares. The previous week, the percentage was 10%. In the same period last year, 28% had been reaped, while the five-year average for the period is 21.4%.

Climate forecast maps now point to lower moisture for most states in the South, Southeast, and Midwest regions, which should favor the advancement of farm machines in the period between March 10 and 16. In the North and Northeast regions, except for the states of Bahia and Tocantins, higher volumes of precipitation are expected.

In the period between March 17 and 23, most states in the South, Northeast and North regions, and part of the state of Mato Grosso are forecast to receive large amounts of cumulative rainfall.
