Porto Alegre, October 8th, 2024 – The planting of the new Brazilian soybean crop made reasonable progress between September 28 and October 4. Despite the improved pace, work remains behind last year and the five-year average for the period.

The arrival of rain in states in the central regions of the country encouraged producers to start sowing in some states and to move forward with work in states that had already started the process. Although moisture is not yet very high, the environment is already starting to look more positive for crop development. It is worth noting that forecasts for the next two weeks indicate an increase in moisture across the country, which should maintain this better environment for planting and crops already sown and speed up work.

According to a survey conducted by SAFRAS & Mercado, through October 4, Brazilian producers had sown 4.1% of the total area expected for the country in the 2024/25 crop. The percentage is equivalent to approximately 1.936 mln hectares planted, out of a total of 47.401 mln hectares estimated for planting. The previous week, the percentage was 1.9%, while in the same period last year the percentage was 7.8%. The five-year average for the period is 5.5%.

In Paraná, 24% of the area destined for soybeans have been planted. The percentage is equivalent to approximately 1.416 mln hectares planted, out of a total of 5.9 mln hectares estimated for the state. The previous week, the percentage was 13%. In the same period last year, the percentage was 23%, while the five-year average for the period is 14%.

In Mato Grosso, out of a total expected area of 12.58 mln hectares, 2% have already been planted, equivalent to approximately 252 thousand hectares. The previous week, the percentage was 0.6%. In the same period last year, the percentage was 14%, while the five-year average for the period is 10%.

In Mato Grosso do Sul, out of a total estimated area of 4.35 mln hectares, 4% were sown, or approximately 174 thousand hectares. The previous week, the percentage was 1%. In the same period last year, 6% were sown. The five-year average for the period is 4.2%.

In Goiás, out of a total expected area of 4.85 mln hectares, 1% was sown, or approximately 49 thousand hectares. The previous week, there were no data. In the same period last year, the percentage was 4%, while the five-year average for the period is 2.9%.

In São Paulo, out of a total expected area of 1.44 mln hectares, 3% were sown, or approximately 43 thousand hectares. The previous week, no data were available. In the same period last year, 4% had been planted. The five-year average for the period is 3.6%.

Climate maps now indicate a period of high moisture over the states of the Southern Region between October 6 and 12, which, despite being favorable for crops already planted, may prevent better progress in the state of Paraná. The Southeast and Midwest regions should also receive moisture but at lower levels, which should allow the acceleration of planting, encouraging producers.

In the period between October 13 and 19, conditions should be quite similar to those of the previous week but with higher accumulations predicted for the Midwest and Southeast regions.
