Porto Alegre, January 26, 2021 – The harvest of the new Brazilian soybean season has been started. Albeit still in a timid way, the work is already beginning to advance in Mato Grosso. As expected, the harvest is starting late in Brazil due to the accumulated delay in sowing. The next state to start reaping must be Paraná in the last week of January. The trend is that the working pace is intensified in the states of Mato Grosso and Paraná only in the second week of February, when the other states of the Midwest and Southeast must start reaping. From now on, growers in these states hope that the climate is not so moist in farms that are already ‘ready’ for agricultural machines to move forward at a satisfactory pace and offset the existing delay. Moreover, the states of the Midwest and Southeast must also start to sow the so-called ‘second crop,’ which will be dedicated mainly to the cultivation of corn and cotton.

According to a survey conducted by SAFRAS & Mercado, until January 22, the harvest was 0.5% complete of a total sown area of 38.415 mln tons, equivalent to approximately 206 thousand hectares. In the previous week, there was no data. In the same period last year, 4% of the area had already been reaped, while the five-year average for the period is 3.9%.

In Mato Grosso, out of a total sown area of 10.08 mln hectares, 2% was reaped, or approximately 206 thousand hectares. In the previous week, there was no data. In the same period last year, 13% had already been reaped. The five-year average for the period is 10.8%.

The climate forecast maps point to satisfactory moisture in Brazil’s South region and in the main growing provinces of Argentina in the period between January 22 and 28. In the Southeast of Brazil, little or no moisture is forecast, while in the Midwest the states of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul are expected to receive spotty rainfall. In the North and Northeast regions, only the state of Pará must receive a slightly higher volume of precipitation, with the other states receiving little or no rain.

In the period between January 29 and February 4, weather maps point to practically the same picture as the previous week in Brazil and Argentina, with highlight on more rainfall in Argentina and increased moisture in part of Mato Grosso, which can hinder the harvest progress in the Brazilian state.
