2020/21 harvest is 78% complete in Brazil
Porto Alegre, July 31, 2020 – With good weather, the harvest progressed well again, advancing 7% last week. In general, the dry weather helped the coffee harvest and drying, except for Matas region (Minas Gerais) and Vitória da Conquista region (Bahia). Next week must have a wetter weather, which can disrupt the progress of the coffee harvest and drying.
The weekly survey by SAFRAS indicates that until July 28, the harvest of the 20/21 season in Brazil reached 78% of the expected production, estimated at 68.10 million 60-kg bags. With that, 53.33 million bags have already been reaped. The work is ahead of the same period last year, when it reached 89% of production, but in line with the five-year average for the period. A faster reaping pace for the past few weeks explains the approach to the average.
In the case of arabica, the harvest is 71% complete, against 85% at the same time last year and in line with the five-year average. The average profile of the arabica crop indicates good quality in terms of cup and bean size. The conillon harvest, on the other hand, is in the final stretch, with 96% of production reaped. In general, the harvest remains below the same period last year (97%) and also far below the five-year average (98%). Conillon production in Espírito Santo has been below expectations, which raises the chances of crop losses in relation to the initial production potential of the state.
