Porto Alegre, January 30, 2024 – The harvest of the new Brazilian soybean crop had a week with slightly slower progress than the previous week, but with the pace remaining above the five-year average for the period. It should be pointed out that a large part of the crops that are already being reaped had their cycle brought forward due to the low moisture and high temperatures registered in the last quarter of 2023 in part of the Midwest, which allows the harvest to be above average now.
According to research carried out by SAFRAS & Mercado, through January 26, 9.0% had been reaped from a total sown area of 45.359 mln hectares, equivalent to approximately 4.105 mln hectares. The previous week, the percentage was 5.1%. In the same period of the previous year, the percentage was 4.4%. The five-year average for the period is 6.4%.
In Paraná, out of a total area of 5.9 mln hectares sown, 15% were reaped, or the equivalent of approximately 885 thousand hectares. The previous week, the percentage was 10%. In the same period last year, the percentage was 2%, while the five-year average for the period is 7.3%.
In Mato Grosso, out of a total sown area of 12.05 mln hectares, 22% were reaped, or approximately 2.651 mln hectares. The previous week, the percentage was 13%. In the same period last year, the percentage was 14%. The five-year average for the period is 17.6%.
In Mato Grosso do Sul, out of the total estimated area of 4.28 mln hectares sown, 5.0% were reaped, or the equivalent of approximately 214 thousand hectares. The previous week, the percentage was 1%. In the same period last year, the percentage was 1%, while the five-year average for the period is 3.2%.
In Goiás, out of a total sown area of 4.65 mln hectares, 7% were reaped, or approximately 326 thousand hectares. The previous week, the percentage was 3%. In the same period last year, the percentage was 2%. The five-year average for the period is 2.1%.
In São Paulo, out of a total area estimated at 1.4 mln hectares sown, 1% was reaped, or approximately 7 thousand hectares. The week before, there was no data. In the same period last year, 1% had been reaped. The five-year average for the period is 1.6%.
In Minas Gerais, out of a total sown area of 2.2 mln hectares, 1% was reaped, equivalent to approximately 22 thousand hectares. Last week, there was no data. In the same period last year, 1% had been reaped, while the five-year average for the period is 2.1%.
Climate forecast maps now point to a period of lower moisture over the states of the Southern Region, states of São Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul, as well as parts of the states of Minas Gerais, Goiás, and Mato Grosso between January 28 and February 3. The states in the North and Northeast regions, as well as other parts of the states of Minas Gerais, Goiás, and Mato Grosso, should receive greater moisture over this period.
In the period between February 4 and 10, moisture increases throughout the country, with lower accumulations expected only for parts of the states of Rio Grande do Sul, Minas Gerais and Bahia.
