Porto Alegre, February 13, 2023 – The harvest of the new Brazilian crop is progressing slowly, with percentages still below average in most regions of the country.
The weather factor has been identified as the main responsible for the slower development, especially in the Midwest. Despite excess moisture last week, for now there is no major concern regarding the quality of crops in general.
According to research carried out by SAFRAS & Mercado, up to February 10, 14.8% had been reaped from a total sown area of 43.749 mln hectares, equivalent to approximately 6.47 mln hectares. The previous week, the percentage was 7.8%. In the same period of the previous year, the percentage was 25.6%. The five-year average for the period is 16%.
In Paraná, from a total area of 5.75 mln hectares sown, about 5% were reaped, or the equivalent of approximately 288 thousand hectares. The previous week, the percentage was 3%. In the same period last year, the percentage was 21%, while the five-year average for the period is 12%.
In Mato Grosso, out of a total sown area of 11.8 mln hectares, 44% were reaped, or approximately 5.192 mln hectares. The previous week, the percentage was 24%. In the same period last year, the percentage was 60%. The five-year average for the period is 42%.
In Mato Grosso do Sul, 4% were reaped, equivalent to approximately 163 thousand hectares out of a total sown area of 4.08 mln hectares. The previous week, the percentage was only 2.5%. In the same period last year, 27% had been reaped, while the five-year average for the period is 14%.
In Goiás, from a total sown area of 4.46 mln hectares, 14% were reaped, or the equivalent of approximately 624 thousand hectares. The previous week, approximately 5% had been reaped. In the same period last year, 23% had been reaped. The five-year average for the period is 13%.
In São Paulo, out of a total sown area of 1.35 mln hectares, 4% were reaped, or the equivalent of approximately 54 thousand hectares. The week earlier, about 2% had been reaped. In the same period last year, the percentage was 8%. The five-year average for the period is 7%.
In Minas Gerais, only 2% were reaped, or the equivalent of approximately 42,000 hectares of a total sown area of 2.1 mln hectares. The previous week, only 1% had been reaped. In the same period last year, the harvest was 8% complete, while the five-year average for the period is 7%.
New weather forecasts point to continued rains for the Northern region of the country, but in the lowest part between the Midwest and South, the rains must affect a good part of Mato Grosso do Sul and some sections of Paraná up to February 16. In the Northeast region, the weather must remain dry with some micro-regional exceptions. São Paulo, in the Southeast region, must receive more moisture with the rains.
From February 17 to 23, the level of rainfall rises again, mainly in the North and Midwest regions of the country. The other regions must receive little moisture, except for Rio Grande do Sul, which must have firm weather and a low level of moisture.
