Soybean planting begins in Brazil

Porto Alegre, September 23, 2022 – The new Brazilian soybean crop has begun. Planting has already started in the growing states where the fallowing period has ended. This is the case of the states of Paraná, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, and São Paulo. The machines are already advancing in the fields of these states, and the initial pace is considered excellent.

According to a survey carried out by SAFRAS & Mercado, until September 23, Brazilian growers sowed 2% of the total area expected for the country in the 2022/23 season. The percentage is equivalent to approximately 857 thousand hectares sown, out of a total of 42.887 mln hectares estimated for planting. In the previous week, the percentage was 0%. In the same period of the previous year, the percentage reached 0.8%, while the five-year average for the period is 0.8%.

In Paraná, 9% of the soybean area were sown. The percentage is equivalent to nearly 518 thousand hectares, out of a total of 5.750 mln hectares estimated for the state. There were no data available the week earlier. In the same period last year, the percentage reached 4%, while the five-year average is 4% for the period.

In Mato Grosso, out of an expected total area of ​​11.85 mln hectares, 2% have already been sown, equivalent to approximately 237 thousand hectares. The week before, there were no data. In the same period of the previous year, the percentage was 1%. The five-year average for the period is 1%.

In Mato Grosso do Sul, the planting reaches 2% of a total area estimated at 3.85 mln hectares, equivalent to approximately 77 thousand hectares. The week before, there were no data. In the same period last year, the percentage was 0%. The five-year average for the period is 0%.

In São Paulo, of a total area estimated at 1.25 mln hectares, 2% were sown, or approximately 25 thousand hectares. The week earlier, there were no data. In the same period of the previous year, the percentage was 0%, while the five-year average for the period is 0%.

The weather forecast maps point to a period of significant rainfall in the states of Paraná, São Paulo, and Mato Grosso do Sul between September 25 and October 1, which could prevent better progress of machines. In the other states of the Midwest and Southeast, some moisture is also expected, but at lower levels, which must allow a good advance.

In the period between October 2 and 8, moisture reaches the South, Midwest and Southeast regions again, but without large accumulations, which must be favorable to the planting.
