Porto Alegre, September 9, 2026 \u2013 The international sugar market showed a very important change in its behavior in August 2026. After remaining around 14 cents per pound throughout practically the entire first half of the year, prices gained strength and ended the month at an average of 16.87 cents, compared with 14.81 cents in July, an increase of close to 14%. More important than the increase itself is the fact that the move is occurring precisely as fundamentals begin to show more consistent signs of reduced available supply for the next season.<\/span><\/p>\n

During much of 2026, the market worked with a perception of comfortable supply, especially given expectations surrounding Brazilian production. This perception helped keep prices under pressure and close to the lows observed during the year. However, beginning in August, expectations started to change. The discussion is no longer focused exclusively on the possibility of large sugarcane production in the Center-South and is beginning to consider the quality of this raw material, the mills\u2019 production mix, the pace of crushing and, above all, the effective availability of sugar for the international market.<\/span><\/p>\n

This movement helps explain the trajectory observed in prices. After averaging 14.34 cents in June and 14.81 cents in July, August advanced to 16.87 cents. Forward projections continue to point in this direction, with prices estimated at 17.80 cents for September, 18.50 cents for October, 19.30 cents for November and 20 cents for December. The curve, therefore, is beginning to incorporate a scenario of stronger support for sugar in the second half of the year.<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the most important elements behind this change is related to the global balance for the 2026\/27 season. The International Sugar Organization significantly revised its assessment of the supply and demand balance, moving from an expected surplus of 1.1 million metric tons to a deficit of approximately 200 thousand metric tons. This change is particularly relevant because it shows that the global market may be moving from an initially comfortable situation toward a much tighter condition.<\/p>\n

In this context, the situation in the European Union is becoming increasingly important. Weather effects associated with El Ni\u00f1o are beginning to appear more clearly in beet production, and the latest estimates point to a very significant reduction in the bloc\u2019s sugar supply. The European Union Sugar Market Observatory estimates that supply in the new international 2026\/27 season should fall 19%, a reduction of 3.15 million metric tons, from 16.55 to 13.40 million metric tons. This projection is even more negative than the estimate previously released by the European Commission, which indicated a 15% decline in production.<\/p>\n

What stands out is the speed at which estimates are deteriorating. In June, SAFRAS & Mercado\u2019s forecast already indicated a reduction of close to 1 million metric tons in European production. In July, the European Commission expanded this estimate to a decline of 2.6 million metric tons. Now, with more updated data on the effects of high temperatures, the estimate has reached a reduction of 3.15 million metric tons in the bloc\u2019s supply.<\/p>\n

Confirmation of more severe problems in European sugar beet is also reflected in Tereos estimates, which in August projected the smallest beet crop in 38 years, with a decline of approximately 25% in yields across the bloc. This reinforces the perception that the problem is not limited to a one-off revision of figures, but may represent an effective deterioration in raw material availability for sugar production.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
