Porto Alegre, November 9, 2020 – The weather condition in early November brings another surprise, that is, frosts in the middle of the spring and at a critical stage for corn crops. The summer crop is heading towards a new cut in production in the next report depending on the rain behavior this month. The other concern is over the planting and development of soybeans, which shows regional replanting and new delays in some locations, such as São Paulo, for example. The window for the second crop now begins to extend into the second half of February.
The summer crop losses in southern Brazil are irreversible regardless of the future rain. The west side of the South region has been hit by very poor rain in the early stages of pollination and silking. The most advanced crops already show the formation of irregular and poorly filled ears. Some towns have had losses of 100% of crops. The plantations that will enter the pollination phase in the second half of November will need a satisfactory improvement in terms of climate. If the rains of this second week of November are not confirmed for most of the South, the losses will grow worse in Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina and must be extended to southern and southwestern sections of Paraná.
The planting of the second crop cannot be regarded as compromised so far. However, the planting window is being extended to the second week of February and March. Possibly, most of the second crop will only be planted in March. Of course, this creates more tension on the climate picture of fall/winter in La Nina year, which will last at least until September. The 20/21 crop starts with enormous development difficulties, already with losses, and starts to demand a lot from the 2021 second crop.
