The planting of the new Brazilian soybean crop had another week of good progress in most growing states that have already started sowing. The exception is the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, where the work progressed at a slower pace due to moisture.

According to a survey carried out by SAFRAS & Mercado, until October 7, Brazilian growers sowed 9.7% of the total area expected for the country in the 2022/23 crop. The percentage is equivalent to approximately 4.154 mln hectares sown, out of a total of 42.887 mln hectares estimated for planting. In the previous week, the percentage was 4.5%. In the same period of the previous year, the index was 9.8%, while the five-year average for the period is 7.3%.

In Paraná, 18% of the area destined for soybeans was sown. The percentage is equivalent to approximately 1.035 mln hectares planted, out of a total of 5.750 mln hectares estimated for the state. In the previous week, the percentage was 12%. In the same period last year, the percentage reached 19%, while the five-year average is 21.2% for the period.

In Mato Grosso, of an expected total area of 11.85 mln hectares, 19% have already been sown, equivalent to approximately 2.252 mln hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 7%. In the same period of the previous year, the percentage was 21%. The five-year average for the period is 11.4%.

In Mato Grosso do Sul, the planting reaches 7% of a total area estimated at 3.85 mln hectares, equivalent to approximately 270 thousand hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 5%. In the same period last year, the percentage was 8%. The five-year average for the period is 7.9%.

In Goiás, of a total expected area of 4.2 mln hectares, 9% were sown, equivalent to 378 thousand hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 3%. In the same period last year, the percentage was also 4%, while the five-year average for the period is 2.8%.

In São Paulo, out of a total area estimated at 1.25 mln hectares, 11% were sown, or approximately 138 thousand hectares. The week earlier, the percentage was 7%. In the same period of the previous year, the percentage was 5%, while the five-year average for the period is 2.6%.

In Minas Gerais, out of an expected total area of 2.05 mln hectares, 4% were sown, or approximately 82 thousand hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 0%. In the same period last year, the percentage was 3%, while the five-year average for the period is 2%.

The weather maps point to a period of heavier rainfall over the states of Santa Catarina, Paraná, and Mato Grosso do Sul between October 8 and 14. The other states in the Midwest and Southeast regions must also receive moisture, but at slightly lower levels, which can prevent a better work pace in the period.

Between October 15 and 21, moisture must remain over the states of the South, Midwest and Southeast, but at lower levels. The exception must be Rio Grande do Sul, which has little or no moisture. The North and Northeast regions must also receive moisture, which must be favorable to the germination of the first sown crops.
