Porto Alegre, October 16, 2023 – The planting of the new Brazilian soybean crop advanced at a reasonable pace in the period between October 7 and 13. Heavy rains prevented better progress in the states of Paraná, Mato Grosso do Sul, and São Paulo, which weighed on the national index. The less moist climate allowed for farm machines to advance well in the state of Mato Grosso. At national level, work remains slightly behind the five-year average for the period. Despite this, at this moment there are no major concerns about the pace of sowing.
According to research carried out by SAFRAS & Mercado, until October 13, Brazilian growers had sown 15.8% of the total area expected for the country in the 2023/24 season. The percentage is equivalent to approximately 7.203 mln hectares sown, out of a total of 45.619 mln hectares estimated for planting. In the previous week, the percentage was 7.8%, while in the same period of the previous year the percentage was 19.1%. The five-year average for the period is 16.7%.
In Paraná, 34% of the area destined for soybeans was sown. The percentage is equivalent to approximately 2.006 mln hectares, out of a total of 5.9 mln hectares estimated for the state. In the previous week, the percentage was 23%. In the same period last year, the percentage was 29%, while the five-year average for the period is 32.2%.
In Mato Grosso, out of an expected total area of 12.23 mln hectares, 35% have already been sown, equivalent to approximately 4.281 mln hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 14%. In the same period last year, the percentage was 41%, while the five-year average for the period is 33.2%.
In Mato Grosso do Sul, out of a total area estimated at 4.28 mln hectares, 9% were sown, or the equivalent of approximately 385 thousand hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 6%. In the same period of 2022, the percentage was 15%, while the five-year average for the period is 15.3%.

In São Paulo, out of a total area estimated at 1.4 mln hectares, 7% were sown, equivalent to approximately 98 thousand hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 4%. In the same period of the previous year, the percentage was 15%. The five-year average for the period is 9.6%.
In Minas Gerais, out of an expected total area of 2.2 mln hectares, 2% were sown, or the equivalent of 44 thousand hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 0.5%. In the same period of the previous year, the percentage was 8%, while the five-year average for the period is 6.4%.
In Bahia, out of a total area estimated at 2 mln hectares, 3% were sown, or approximately 60 thousand hectares. The week before, there was no data. In the same period last year, 1% had been sown. The five-year average for the period is 0.6%.
Climate maps now point to a period of greater moisture in the states of the Southern Region and the state of São Paulo between October 13 and 19. In the other states in the central part of the country, rain is expected but in smaller amounts, which should allow for good progress of farm machines and germination of the sown crops. In the states of the North and Northeast regions, little or no moisture is expected.
In the period between October 20 and 26, reasonable moisture reaches practically all the main growing states, with greater accumulation expected for Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina. The states of the North and Northeast should continue to receive lower cumulative volumes.
