Porto Alegre, February 27, 2024 – The harvest of the new Brazilian soybean season continues to advance rapidly in the country, with percentages higher than in previous years.
According to research carried out by SAFRAS & Mercado, through February 23, around 37.4% were reaped from a total sown area of 45.409 mln hectares, equivalent to approximately 16.964 mln hectares. The previous week, the percentage was 28.7%. In the same period of the previous year, the percentage was 30.3%. The five-year average for the period is 32.6%.
In Paraná, out of a total area of 5.9 mln hectares sown, 45% were reaped, or the equivalent of approximately 2.655 mln hectares. The previous week, the percentage was 35%. In the same period last year, the percentage was 19%, while the five-year average for the period is 25.8%.
In Mato Grosso, out of a total sown area of 12.1 mln hectares, 78% were reaped, or approximately 9.438 mln hectares. The previous week, the percentage was 64%. In the same period last year, the percentage was 76%. The five-year average for the period is 70%.
In Mato Grosso do Sul, out of the total estimated area of 4.28 mln hectares sown, 35% were reaped, or the equivalent of approximately 1498 thousand hectares. The previous week, the percentage was 22%. In the same period last year, the percentage was 13%, while the five-year average for the period is 30.2%.
In Goiás, out of a total sown area of 4.65 mln hectares, 44% were reaped, or approximately 2.046 thousand hectares. The previous week, the percentage was 30%. In the same period last year, the percentage was 40%. The five-year average for the period is 41.2%.
In São Paulo, out of a total area estimated at 1.4 mln hectares, 29% were reaped, or approximately 406 thousand hectares. The previous week, the percentage was 22%. In the same period last year, 10% had been reaped. The five-year average for the period is 24%.
In Minas Gerais, out of a total sown area of 2.2 mln hectares, 25% were reaped, equivalent to approximately 550 thousand hectares. The previous week, the percentage was 16%. In the same period last year, 10% had been reaped, while the five-year average for the period is 24%.
In Bahia, out of a total sown area of 2 mln hectares, 8% were reaped, or approximately 160 thousand hectares. The previous week, the percentage was 7%. In the same period last year, 7% had been reaped, while the five-year average for the period is 9.2%.
Climate forecast maps point to the continuation of good rain in the northern region of the country, which could maintain a slower harvest pace. Between February 24 and March 1, the maps show high levels of rain in the north, covering the states of Maranhão, Piauí, and part of Tocantins. In the central region of the country, rainfall has decreased, and therefore the advancement of farm machines should remain without difficulties.
Looking further ahead, from March 2 to 8, moisture is concentrated in the north but also covers the states in central and northeastern Brazil. In the Southeast and South regions, the climate is expected to remain drier, mainly in the states of Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul.
