Porto Alegre, October 26, 2020 – The planting of the new Brazilian soybean crop had a week of better progress in the period between October 17 and 22. The forecast and confirmation of the arrival of a period of higher moisture, mainly in the Midwest and Southeast of the country, encouraged growers. There was a reasonable recovery, but the pace remains well below the normal average for this time of year.
According to a survey conducted by SAFRAS & Mercado, until October 23, Brazilian growers sowed 16.3% of the total area expected for the country. The percentage is equivalent to nearly 6.180 million hectares sown, out of a total of 37.940 million hectares estimated for planting in the country. In the previous week, the percentage was 6.1%. In the same period of the previous year, the percentage reached 30.8%, while the five-year average for the period is 27.7%.
In Paraná, 35% of the area destined for soybeans were sown. The percentage is equivalent to around 1.96 million hectares planted, out of a total of 5.6 million hectares estimated for the state. In the previous week, the percentage was 20%. In the same period last year, the index reached 48%, while the five-year average is 53% for the period.
In Mato Grosso, out of an expected total area of 10.21 million hectares, 26% have already been sown, equivalent to nearly 2.655 million hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 8%. In the same period of the previous year, the index was 65%. The five-year average for the period is 45.6%.
In Mato Grosso do Sul, out of a total area estimated at 3.08 million hectares, 18% have already been sown, equivalent to roughly 554 thousand hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 4%. In the same period last year, the percentage was 25%, while the five-year average for the period is 38%.
In Goiás, out of a total expected area of 3.745 million hectares, 12% were sown, or nearly 449 thousand hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 5%, while in the same period last year the index was 25%. The five-year average for the period is 24.4%.
In São Paulo, out of a total area estimated at 1.080 million hectares, 5% were sown, or approximately 54 thousand hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 2%, while in the same period of the previous year the percentage was 9%. The five-year average for the period is 11.9%.
In Minas Gerais, out of a total area estimated at 1.745 million hectares, 8% were sown, or nearly 140 thousand hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 3%. In the same period last year, the percentage was 18%, while the five-year average for the period is 15.4%.
In Santa Catarina, the planting is 1% complete of an expected total area of 755 thousand hectares, which is equivalent to approximately 8 thousand hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 0%. In the same period of the previous year, the percentage was 10%, while the average for the period is 11.8%.
The weather forecasts point to another week with great moisture in practically all the growing regions in the period between October 23 and 29, with highlight on the great rainfall expected for parts of Paraná, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Goiás, and Mato Grosso. The greater volume of precipitation may even prevent a better advance of the work in the period, but it will be quite favorable for the crops already sown and for the soil of those to be planted.
In the period between October 30 and November 5, forecasts point to little or no moisture in the Southern region and the states of Mato Grosso do Sul, and São Paulo. The other states of the Midwest and Southeast, as well as the states of MAPITOBA and Pará, must receive a great accumulation of rainfall.
