Porto Alegre, October 11, 2021 – The planting of the new Brazilian soybean crop picked up speed again last week. With weather forecasts pointing to the arrival of rain across the country in the next two weeks, growers accelerated work in the states of the central strip of the country. More abundant rainfall registered in the state of Paraná prevented a better advance in the period.

According to a survey carried out by SAFRAS & Mercado, until October 8, Brazilian growers had sowed 9.8% of the total area expected for the country in the 2021/22 crop. The percentage is equivalent to roughly 3.896 million hectares out of a total of 39.820 million hectares estimated for planting. In the week earlier, the percentage was 4%. In the same period of the previous year, the percentage reached 2.3%, while the five-year average for the period is 9.1%.

In Paraná, 19% of the area destined for soybeans were sown. The percentage is equivalent to approximately 1.086 million hectares planted, out of a total of 5.620 million hectares estimated for the state. In the week earlier, the percentage was 9%. In the same period last year, the percentage reached 10%, while the five-year average is 25.2% for the period.

In Mato Grosso, from an expected total area of 10.82 million hectares, 21% have already been sown, equivalent to approximately 2.272 million hectares. In the week earlier, the percentage was 8%. In the same period of the previous year, the percentage was 3%. The five-year average for the period is 14.2%.

In Mato Grosso do Sul, planting reaches 8% of an estimated total area of 3.45 million hectares, equivalent to nearly 276 thousand hectares. In the week earlier, the percentage was 5%, while in the same period last year, the index was 0.3%. The five-year average for the period is 10.9%.

In Goiás, from a total area estimated at 3.835 million hectares, 4% were sown, equivalent to approximately 153 thousand hectares. In the previous week, there was no data, while in the same period last year, the percentage was 0.2%. The five-year average for the period is 3.8%.

In São Paulo, from a total area estimated at 1.185 million hectares, 5% were sown, or around 59 thousand hectares. In the week earlier, the percentage was 2%. In the same period of the previous year, the percentage was 0%, while the five-year average for the period is 2.6%.

In Minas Gerais, the planting is 3% complete of a total area estimated at 1.88 million hectares, equivalent to approximately 56 thousand hectares. In the week earlier, the percentage was 0.5%. In the same period last year, the index was 0.2%, while the five-year average for the period is 1.6%.

Weather forecast maps point to the arrival of large volumes of precipitation in the states of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Paraná, Mato Grosso do Sul, São Paulo, and Minas Gerais in the period between October 8 and 14. This fact must allow a better planting evolution in the period, although it may be favorable for the recovery of soil moisture in some states. In the other Midwestern states in the North and Northeast regions, rainfall is also expected, but at lower levels.

In the period between October 15 and 21, all producing states must receive rainfall at reasonable levels, which must be favorable for the germination of already sown crops, but could prevent a better work advance in some states.
