Porto Alegre, October 19, 2020 – The planting of the new Brazilian soybean crop keeps advancing at a slow pace in the states of the Midwest, Southeast, and part of the South region. With little moisture registered in recent weeks, growers continue to wait for more regular rains to resume the work. This fact keeps the planting well behind the normal average for this time of year.
According to a survey carried out by SAFRAS & Mercado, until October 16, Brazilian growers sowed only 6.1% of the total area expected for the country. The percentage is equivalent to approximately 2.306 mln hectares sown, out of a total of 37.940 mln hectares estimated for planting in the country. In the previous week, the index was 2.3%. In the same period of the previous year, the percentage reached 19.5%, while the five-year average for the period is 17.3%.
In Paraná, 20% of the area destined for soybeans have been sown. The percentage is equivalent to nearly 1.12 mln hectares planted, out of a total of 5.6 mln hectares estimated for the state. In the previous week, the percentage was 10%. In the same period last year, the percentage reached 36%, while the five-year average is 39.4% for the period.
In Mato Grosso, out of a total expected area of 10.21 mln hectares, 8% have already been sown, equivalent to nearly 817 thousand hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 3%. In the same period of the previous year, the percentage was 42%. The five-year average for the period is 28.8%.
In Mato Grosso do Sul, out of a total area estimated at 3.08 mln hectares, 4% have already been sown, equivalent to approximately 108 thousand hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 0.3%. In the same period last year, the percentage was 16%, while the five-year average for the period is 23.6%.
In Goiás, out of a total expected area of 3.745 mln hectares, 5% were sown, or nearly 187 thousand hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 0.2%, while in the same period last year the percentage was 12%. The five-year average for the period is 9.9%.
In São Paulo, out of a total area estimated at 1.080 mln hectares, 2% were sown, or approximately 22 thousand hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 0%, while in the same period of the previous year the percentage was 5%. The five-year average for the period is 6%.
In Minas Gerais, out of a total area estimated at 1.745 mln hectares, 3% were sown, or nearly 52 thousand hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 0.2%. In the same period last year, the percentage was 5%, while the five-year average for the period is 6.5%.
Weather forecasts point to the maintenance of some moisture over the states of the central strip of the country between October 16 and 22. In the period between October 23 and 29, forecasts point to the arrival of more voluminous rain in practically all growing states, with higher volumes being expected for Minas Gerais, Goiás, São Paulo, Mato Grosso do Sul, and Paraná. Such moisture will be extremely favorable for soils, unlocking the advance of planting.
