Porto Alegre, December 22, 2020 – The planting of the new Brazilian soybean crop progressed to the final stretch. With the sowing already closed in the Midwest and Southeast states, the work is yet to be finished only in areas of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and in the states of the North and Northeast regions.
According to a survey conducted by SAFRAS & Mercado, until December 18, Brazilian growers sowed 95.7% of the total area expected for the country. The percentage is equivalent to around 36.77 million hectares sown, out of a total of 38.415 million hectares estimated for planting in the country. In the previous week, the index was 93.5%. In the same period of the previous year, the percentage reached 96.2%, while the five-year average for the period is 96.7%.
In Rio Grande do Sul, out of a total area estimated at 6.08 million hectares, 89% were sown, or nearly 5.41 million hectares. In the previous week, the index was 81%, while in the same period last year it reached 93%. The five-year average for this time of year is 95.6%.
In Paraná, 100% of the area destined for soybeans were sown, or approximately 5.6 million hectares. In the previous week, the index was 100%. In the same period last year, the percentage reached 100%, while the five-year average is 99.8% for the period.
In Mato Grosso, out of a total expected area of 10.3 million hectares, 100% were sown. In the previous week, the index was 100%. In the same period of the previous year, the percentage was 100%. The five-year average for the period is 99.8%.
In Mato Grosso do Sul, out of a total area estimated at 3.25 million hectares, 100% were sown. In the previous week, the index was 100%. In the same period last year, the percentage was 100%, while the five-year average for the period is 100%.
In Goiás, out of a total expected area of 3.795 million hectares, 100% were sown. In the previous week, the index was 97%, while in the same period last year the percentage was 100%. The five-year average for the period is 99.8%.
In São Paulo, out of a total area estimated at 1.08 million hectares, 100% were sown. In the previous week, the index was 99%, while in the same period of the previous year the percentage was 100%. The five-year average for the period is 99.8%.
In Minas Gerais, out of a total area estimated at 1.82 million hectares, 100% were sown. In the previous week, the index was 99%. In the same period last year, the percentage was 100%, while the five-year average for the period is 99.4%.
In Bahia, out of a total area estimated at 1.67 million hectares, 100% were sown. In the previous week, the index was 99%, while in the same period last year the percentage was 98%. The five-year average for the period is 96.2%.
In Santa Catarina, the planting is 99% complete of an expected total area of 750 thousand hectares, which is equivalent to nearly 743 thousand hectares. In the previous week, the index was 95%. In the same period of the previous year, the percentage was 100%, while the average for the period is 99.6%.
Weather forecasts point to rain in practically all growing states in the period between December 18 and 24. Between December 25 and 31, most states in the central strip of the country must receive large volumes of rainfall. In Rio Grande do Sul and Bahia, little moisture is expected.
