Porto Alegre, November 23, 2020 – The planting progress of the new Brazilian soybean crop was mixed in the main growing states of the country. While in the states of Paraná, Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso, and Minas Gerais the work progressed well and is already advancing to the final stretch, in other states the planting was slower, falling behind the normal average for this period of the year.
According to a survey conducted by SAFRAS & Mercado, until November 20, Brazilian growers planted 74.1% of the total area expected for the country. The percentage is equivalent to nearly 28.391 million hectares, out of a total of 38.325 million hectares estimated for the country. In the previous week, the index was 67.3%. In the same period of the previous year, the percentage reached 75.7%, while the five-year average for the period is 75.5%.
In Paraná, 95% of the area for soybeans were sown. The percentage is equivalent to roughly 5.32 million hectares, out of a total of 5.6 million hectares estimated for the state. In the previous week, the percentage was 87%. In the same period last year, the index reached 97%, while the five-year average is 93% for the period.
In Mato Grosso, out of a total expected area of 10.29 million hectares, 96% have already been sown, equivalent to approximately 9.88 million hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 93%. In the same period of the previous year, the index was 99%. The five-year average for the period is 95%.
In Mato Grosso do Sul, out of a total area estimated at 3.25 million hectares, 95% have already been sown, equivalent to roughly 3.09 million hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 90%. In the same period last year, the index was 87%, while the five-year average for the period is 95%.
In Goiás, out of a total expected area of 3.795 million hectares, 69% were sown, or approximately 2.62 million hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 61%, while in the same period last year the index was 77%. The five-year average for the period is 82.6%.
In São Paulo, out of a total area estimated at 1.08 million hectares, 50% were sown, or roughly 540 thousand hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 30%, while in the same period of the previous year the index was 94%. The five-year average for the period is 86.8%.
In Minas Gerais, out of a total area estimated at 1.755 million hectares, 96% were sown, or approximately 1.51 million hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 62%. In the same period last year, the index was 67%, while the five-year average for the period is 70%.
In Bahia, out of a total area estimated at 1.67 million hectares, 47% were sown, or roughly 785 thousand hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 40%, while in the same period last year the index was 18%. The five-year average for the period is 42.2%.
In Santa Catarina, the planting is 65% complete of an expected total area of 750 thousand hectares, which is equivalent to approximately 488 thousand hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 50%. In the same period of the previous year, the index was 88%, while the average for the period is 77.6%.
Weather forecasts point to little or no moisture in the period between November 20 and 26 for the states of Santa Catarina, Paraná, Mato Grosso do Sul, São Paulo, and parts of the states of Rio Grande do Sul, Minas Gerais, Goiás, and Mato Grosso. This low moisture will again concern growers who have already sown their crops and need more regular rain from now on. The states of the North and Northeast, on the other hand, must receive reasonable rainfall, with highlight on significant precipitation in Pará.
In the period between November 27 and December 3, practically all the growing states in the country will again receive precipitation, albeit in small volume in some locations.
