Porto Alegre, October 22th, 2024 – The planting of the new Brazilian soybean crop once again progressed at a good pace between October 12 and 18. The expansion and maintenance of moisture throughout all producing regions of the country encouraged growers and allowed farm machines to advance in the main states, recovering part of the delays at the national level. Despite this, work remains behind schedule compared to last year and the five-year average, with Mato Grosso standing out negatively.

According to a survey conducted by SAFRAS & Mercado, through October 18, Brazilian growers planted 16.8% of the total area expected for the country in the 2024/25 season. The percentage is equivalent to approximately 7.97 mln hectares planted, out of a total of 47.401 mln hectares estimated for planting. The previous week, the rate was 8.2%, while in the same period of the previous year it was 28.6%. The five-year average for the period is 21.5%.

In Paraná, 44% of the area destined for soybeans have been sown. The rate is equivalent to nearly 2.596 mln hectares planted, out of a total of 5.9 mln hectares estimated for the state. The previous week, the rate was 36%. In the same period last year, the percentage was 49%, while the five-year average for the period is 35.2%.

In Mato Grosso, out of a total expected area of 12.58 mln hectares, 24% have already been sown, equivalent to approximately 3.019 mln hectares. The previous week, the percentage was 9%. In the same period last year, the rate was 61%, while the five-year average for the period is 44.6%.

In Mato Grosso do Sul, out of an estimated total area of 4.35 mln hectares, 26% were sown, or roughly 1.131 mln hectares. The previous week, the percentage was 9%. In the same period last year, 27% had been sown. The five-year average for the period is 17.9%.

In São Paulo, out of an expected total area of 1.44 mln hectares, 11% have been sown, or around 158 thousand hectares. The previous week, the percentage was 5%. In the same period last year, 13% had been sown. The five-year average for the period is 14.6%.

In Minas Gerais, 8% have been sown, or approximately 188 thousand hectares of a total area estimated at 2.35 mln hectares. The previous week, the rate was 1%. In the same period last year, 8% had been sown. The five-year average for the period is 9.4%.

In Bahia, out of an expected total area of 2.1 mln hectares, 3% has been sown, or approximately 63 thousand hectares. The previous week, the percentage was 0.5%. In the same period last year, the rate was 4%, while the five-year average for the period is 1.8%.

Climate maps now indicate a period of high moisture between October 19 and 25 over most of the Southeast, Midwest, and Northeast regions, besides the state of Paraná. The other producing states in the country should also receive rainfall but at less significant levels. Although moisture is favorable to most states, excessive rainfall may prevent machines from advancing better in some states in the central part of the country.

In the period between October 25 and 31, more moisture is expected for the Southeast Region and the states of Paraná, Mato Grosso do Sul, and Goiás. The other producing states should also receive rainfall but at lower levels.
