New soybean season harvest moves slowly in Brazil

The harvest of the new Brazilian soybean crop continues in the states of the Southeast and Midwest regions, besides the state of Paraná, but remains at a slow pace and below average in most states.

Excess moisture hinders work, especially in the Midwest and Southeast. In Paraná, the advance is still slow due to the delay in crop maturation. However, there are no major concerns regarding crop quality in these states.

According to research carried out up to February 3 by SAFRAS & Mercado, 7.8% had been reaped from a total sown area of 43.749 mln hectares, equivalent to approximately 3.422 mln hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 4.4%. In the same period last year, the percentage was 17.1%. The five-year average for the period is 10%.

In Paraná, from a total area of 5.75 mln hectares sown, 3% were reaped, or the equivalent of approximately 173 thousand hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 1%. In the same period last year, the percentage was 17%, while the five-year average for the period is approximately 10%.

In Mato Grosso, out of a total sown area of 11.8 mln hectares, 24% were reaped, or approximately 2.832 mln hectares. In the week earlier, the percentage was 14%. In the same period last year, the percentage was 46%. The five-year average for the period is 27%.

In Mato Grosso do Sul, around 3% were reaped, or the equivalent to approximately 102 thousand hectares of a total sown area of 4.08 mln hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 1%. In the same period last year, 10% had been reaped, while the five-year average for the period is 7%.

In Goiás, from a total sown area of 4.46 mln hectares, 5% were reaped, or the equivalent of approximately 223 thousand hectares. In the previous week, 2% had been reaped. In the same period last year, the percentage was 10%. The five-year average for the period is 5%.

In São Paulo, out of a total sown area of 1.35 mln hectares, 2% were reaped, or the equivalent of approximately 27,000 hectares. The week earlier, 1% had been reaped. In the same period last year, 4% had been reaped. The five-year average for the period is 3%.

In Minas Gerais, 1% was reaped, or the equivalent of approximately 21,000 hectares of a total sown area of 2.1 mln hectares. In the previous week, only 0.5% had been reaped. In the same period last year, 4% had been reaped, while the five-year average for the period is 3%.

Weather maps show the continuity of the low level of moisture, among the states of the South Region in the period between February 3 and 9. The states in the Southeast, Midwest and North regions must maintain larger rainfall levels, with few micro-regional exceptions. The states of the Northeast Region must receive irregular rainfall, except for the state of Bahia, which must remain dry or with little moisture.

During the period between February 10 ad 16, moisture heads for the South region, not reaching high levels but staying above the previous period. The other regions may have conditions similar to those of the previous week, but must be less rainy. In Mato Grosso, the accumulated precipitation must decrease a little, while in São Paulo and in part of Minas Gerais moisture must be a little higher.
