Porto Alegre, September 26, 2023 – The harvest for the new US soybean crop has already begun in the main states of the growing belt. Owing to a strong planting pace throughout the sowing period, the harvest is starting within the ideal window and also at a good pace.
According to USDA, through September 17, 5% of the US area have already been reaped. The week before, there were no data. In the same period last year, the percentage was 3%, while the five-year average for the period is 4%.
Regarding crop conditions, the indices remained unchanged in the period between September 11 and 17, interrupting four consecutive weeks of worsening in national numbers. The data continue to point to national indices lower than those registered at the same time last year.
According to USDA, as of September 17, 52% of US soybean crops were in good or excellent conditions, 30% in fair conditions, and 18% in poor or very poor conditions. In the previous week, the percentages were 52%, 30% and 18%, respectively. At the same time in 2022, the data pointed to 55% of crops in good or excellent conditions, 30% in fair condition, and 15% in poor or very poor conditions.
The period between September 17 and 23 had a mixed climate, with good rain in some states and little or no moisture in other states of the growing belt. This fact may have once again created an environment for maintaining national indices, although some isolated changes may occur in some states.
From now on, as most of the crops are ready to be reaped, attention turns to the harvest, and no longer to the conditions of the crops. Therefore, a less moist climate is more favorable for the progress of work in the coming few weeks.
Climate forecasts now point to a period of greater moisture over most of the main growing states between September 24 and 30, which could hinder the progress of machines in some states, although excessive rainfall is not expected. Lower moisture is expected for the western half of the belt, which could favor the advance of machines.
In the period between October 1 and 7, moisture must reach most of the growing belt, but no large accumulations are expected.
