Brazilian soybean harvest remains delayed

     Porto Alegre, March 10, 2021 – The harvest of the new Brazilian soybean crop progressed at a reasonable pace last week. With moist climate in part of the Midwest and Southeast, the environment was better for advancement in some areas. In Mato Grosso, however, excess moisture continued to hinder the advance of machines.

     According to a survey carried out until March 5 by SAFRAS & Mercado, 34.2% of a total sown area of 38.610 million tons were reaped, equivalent to nearly 13.2 million hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 22.5%. In the same period last year, 49.2% of the area had already been reaped, while the five-year average for the period is 43.9%.

     In Rio Grande do Sul, out of a total sown area of 6.08 million hectares, 0.5% were reaped or nearly 30 thousand hectares. In the previous week, there was no figure. In the same period last year, 5% had already been reaped, while the five-year average for the period is 4.4%.

     In Paraná, out of a total area of 5.6 million hectares sown, 25% were reaped or the equivalent to around 1.4 million hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 11%. In the same period last year, 57% were already reaped, while the five-year average for the period is 49.4%.

     In Mato Grosso, out of a total sown area of ​​10.3 million hectares, 67% were reaped or roughly 6.9 million hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 52%. In the same period last year, 91% had already been reaped. The five-year average for the period is 77%.

     In Mato Grosso do Sul, out of a total sown area of 3.25 million hectares, 40% were reaped or nearly 1.3 million hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 15%. In the same period of the previous year, 69% had already been reaped, while the five-year average for the period is 62.4%.

     In Goiás, out of a total sown area of 3.795 million hectares, 45% were reaped or nearly 1.7 million hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 35%. In the same period last year, 48% had already been reaped. The five-year average for the period is 52.6%.

     In São Paulo, out of a total sown area of 1.16 million hectares, 50% were reaped or nearly 580 thousand hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 25%. In the same period of the previous year, 30% had already been reaped, while the five-year average for the period is 39.6%.

     In Minas Gerais, out of a total area estimated at 1.82 million hectares, 33% were reaped or nearly 601 thousand hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 23%. In the same period of the previous year, the percentage reaped reached 29%. The five-year average for the period is 31.2%.

     In Bahia, out of a total sown area of 1.7 million hectares, 6% were reaped or nearly 102 thousand hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 4%. In the same period last year, 16% had already been reaped. The five-year average for the period is 12.6%.

     The weather forecasts point to a less moist climate for the South, Southeast and Midwest regions in the period between March 5 and 11, which must favor the advance of machines in most states. In Mato Grosso, although less moisture is expected for most of the state, the northern half must still receive some heavier rainfall.

     In the period between March 12 and 18, moisture must be even lower in the states of the South, Midwest and Southeast.
