Brazilian coffee physical market surges and sets new price tops

Porto Alegre, October 15th, 2021 – The internal price of physical coffee has risen over the week by BRL 50.00 to 100.00 a bag. Besides the gains on ICE US and the high dollar, the physical market also found support in the positive detachment of the physical from the external benchmark. The defensive stance of sellers, reinforced by the advance of the off-season and lower availability in the current season, guarantees additional support to the internal physical market.

Sales continue at a very slow pace. Good cup is pegged at BRL 1,250 a bag in the south of Minas Gerais. Fine cup from Cerrado reaches BRL 1,270 a bag, going up to BRL 1,320 for extra fine and certified batches. Rio cup from Matas de Minas is around BRL 1,100 a bag.

The domestic industry remains aggressive and guarantees support for conillon prices, which once again tested new nominal highs in the physicals. Conillon type 7/8 is indicated at BRL 825, reaching BRL 830 per bag in Colatina, Espírito Santo. The concern about the lack of coffee is a factor that stimulates the growth of purchases in advance, including positions with delivery for next season.

The availability of arabica hard cup for domestic consumption remains short, which guarantees price support. The local industry finds in the exports of grinders (coffees with a substandard screen size) a very aggressive rival, which contributes to boosting prices. Buy prices are wide open between large and small industries. In any case, arabica hard cup with 600 defects moves as needed, and growers are asking BRL 1,130 to 1,170 a bag in São Paulo or Minas Gerais. This price is very close to that of medium screen and good cups destined for exports.
